Target Audience
This programme will equip students with the necessary qualifications to apply for an Early Years course and other programmes which ask for MQF3 Proficiency in Maltese.
If the applicant wishes to apply for the LSE course, please note that the qualification per se does not fulfil the requirements of an O’Level, however the programme covers different areas in the syllabus of the myexams.gov.mt exams. Therefore, if the student follows the course, he/she will have enough knowledge to acquire a pass in these exams.(/i)
Grading
To successfully complete the programme, students have to:
Achieve minimum of 50% of the global mark in every module
Attend for at least 80% of the online lessons

The Programme
This course is designed for individuals who already have a basic knowledge of Maltese, and know how to converse and write in Maltese, but would like to obtain better understanding and knowledge on its linguistic principles of the language. This course delves further into the language, its linguistic rules and how these ae used in speech, listening, writing and understanding. The programme also aims to improve the students’ ability in writing, and exposes them to different reading material which will enhance their skills.
Modules
The aim of this module is to increase the learners’ ability to understand different genres of texts, on various themes. The learners will learn how to derive literal and inferential meaning, make predictions according to the readings, use different reading strategies and discuss texts by adding their own opinions and interpretation.
Assessment Methods: 60% based on continuous assessment and 40% from examination held at the end of the unit (open book, not timed).
Module Learning Outcomes
By the end of the programme, the learner will be able to:
Interpret different texts and give their own opinion related to the topic of the reading.
Keeping in mind the genre of the reading presented, as well as its purpose, to determine whether the information is to be considered factual or subjective.
Deal with arguments in texts that might challenge own beliefs, and what an individual might previously have considered as factual before being introduced to the information.
Discuss own thoughts on presented readings, keeping to the point to the theme of the text.
Differentiate between facts, opinions and rumours as well as any bias the author might have admitted to.
Identify different styles and structures presented in written form.
Analyse and identify the main points of the text presented.
Recognise whether the text presented is to be taken from a literal perspective, or if the text has implicit messages that needs more in-depth analysis.
Discuss and give their opinion on the various themes presented in the texts.
Answer inferential and referential questions about the texts.
Identify the meaning of new vocabulary related to the different themes from the context of the reading presented.
Identify which styles are appropriate for different literary situations.
Identify different language registers used by authors according to their aim – descriptive, informative, narrative, argumentative, didactic, fictional, etc.
Understand that texts are presented using different writing styles and structures, according to the target audience and purpose of the reading.
Use different strategies including skimming, scanning and in-depth reading; depending on the purpose, the information needed and the time allocated, to answer questions related to the texts.
Apply their knowledge and fluency in reading to identify direct and hidden meanings from texts.
Make predictions on how a literary text might end, based on the information acquired from the text.
Use the dictionary, thesaurus and/or glossaries to help them identify meanings and/or synonyms of some vocabulary that they might encounter during the programme or in the future.
Identify different forms of text and discuss why the author might have chosen to use such styles and strategies.
Define the purpose of the different genres of writing presented in the module.
The aim of this module is to improve the students’ ability to communicate their ideas and thoughts effectively, and also properly analyse properly the messages in audio or viva voce excerpts. The students will be exposed to different formats of writing, presented orally, which include newspaper articles, debates, fictional texts, discussions, reports and adverts.
Assessment Methods: 60% based on continuous assessment and 40% from examination held at the end of the unit (open book, not timed).
Module Learning Outcomes
By the end of the programme, the learner will be able to:
Analyse texts that are presented orally and give their own reactions and opinions in relation to what they have heard.
Participate in a discussion about a theme in a group of three, where the students need to give their contribution as well as listen to what the other students are saying.
Present their opinion about a theme, not only by stating what they think, but by also by presenting relevant facts that reinforce their argument.
List the main points of a text presnted orally, and properly identify when the author uses idiomatic expressions, sarcasm, irony and figurative speech.
Identify the format of texts read to them or presented audiovisually. (formats listed in introduction).
Identify figurative speech in a text read to them.
Use formal and informal language orally, according to the situation presented by the tutor.
Demonstrate a fictitious conversation with another student, using sarcasm and irony appropriately, and with proper variation of tone and articulation.
Understand, memorise important details and properly interpret text presented orally in different formats (formats listed in the introduction of this module)
Research a theme discussed, to find more information that can be used during discussions.
This module aims to help students refine their Maltese writing through correct grammar. In this module, the following will be tackled: the alphabet, nouns, verbs, adjectives, number words, pronouns, punctuation and Deċiżjonijiet 1 u 2

Module Learning Outcomes
By the end of the programme, the learner will be able to:
Define the terms of grammatical components and their proper use
Identify mistakes in written texts based on the knowledge gained throughout the module
Identify errors seen in daily newspaper articles and on soical media
Structure words with silent letters correctly, using the principles taught
How to use the models taught and use the verb forms
Apply their knowledge of grammar principles to work out different exercises
Show the ability to identify their own mistakes and be able to correct them
Demonstrate the ability to write words using the grammar rules, e.g. words with silent letters
Apply the grammar rules in context
Identify and structure words that have updated in deċizjonijiet 1 u 2
In this module, the students will learn how to enrich their writing, and use more idiomatic language, in different genres of writing which include; narrative, descriptive and argumentative texts, book reviews, reports, as well as letters and emails. They will also be guided on how to improve their writings on social media.

Produce different writing texts that are in the correct format, depending on the genre, purpose, and audience.
Plan their writing using a structured plan
Define the different forms of writing, including argumentative, descriptive, and narrative.
Identify the difference in style used in argumentative, descriptive and narrative writings.
Recall the different forms of communicating in writing, including letters, emails, messages, as well as social platform posts and comments.
Identify the best format of written communication one should use according to the situation.
Find idioms and/or figurative speech according to the message they want to communicate.
Compose writing tasks using the proper structure according to the subject, genre, audience, and the aim.
Compose different forms of writing including emails and letters.
Create writings in the form of argumentative, descriptive, and narrative.
Communicate on social platforms by using the language properly, writing posts and commenting, as well as contributing to blogs, etc.
Use idiomatic Maltese to embellish their writing
Use correct orthography in their writing by applying the rules they have learnt.
Prepare reports that are based on events presented in video format.
Write a book review.
Write an interesting fictional story using idiomatic Maltese
Give a detailed description using the degrees of adjectives
Develop an idea and argue for and against in the subject at hand
Write a letter and and an email with appropriate structure

• Create a fictitious conversation showing clear pronunciation, appropriate intonation, and the effective use of sarcasm and irony to communicate specific messages.
• Use correct grammar in their writing.
• Identify spelling errors and correct them.
